Television cameras should be allowed in courtrooms
In some countries, including the United States, you can watch court proceedings on TV. Some people who watch it find it quite addictive, especially the more gripping trials.
In the UK, TV cameras in courtrooms are currently banned. The proceedings are described afterwards by a reporter and a sketch of a scene in the courtroom is shown.
However, there is about to be a change in the law which will allow broadcasting from the Court of Appeal; this is the part when the judge gives the sentence.
Some people think it will be too boring for television and others think it will be a good way to educate people about how the courts work. Another person argues that seeing the sentencing on television could lead to public pressure to bring back the death penalty and harsher punishments. Is television really that powerful?
